In the garden of Eden everything was perfect. Adam and Eve were naked, and they were not ashamed of their body. God created their sexuality as something good and perfect. But then came sin and sexual temptation.
From there, the devil and man started to pervert everything.
It’s almost a taboo topic, but in the present day, it is astonishing how many people are slaves of a lot of sexual sins.
This is serious and the Word of God treats sexual sins as something to be taken very seriously, but good news is: we don’t have to worry.
We have the amazing power to overcome this through Jesus our Lord.
First, we must remember our holy duty to remain pure and not break the Lord’s commandments when it comes to our sexuality, just like the Apostle Paul emphasized in several letters to the churches.
Because God will judge every person that doesn’t obey his will when it comes to remaining sexually pure, we have the obligation to take every step to remain absolutely holy.
With this in mind, let’s go on to see the amazing help the Bible offers us in 5 simple steps to defeat sexual temptation, no matter when or where it happens.
So, here are the 5 simple and great steps you must take to beat sexual temptation and glorify God:
Get rid of excuses
You might think you’re weak but you can do all things in Christ, including beating the sexual desires of your flesh.
This is why Paul clearly indicates us on Romans 6:12-13 to get rid of all excuses:
Romans 6:12: “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness”.
As well as in 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5:
1 Thessalonians 4:3-5: “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God”.
When one reads how Paul states: “Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness”, one can definitely understand that the Apostle Paul did not tolerate any excuses in the church of the Romans.
Fortunately we have a loving God, because instead of making up excuses to feel better about our sexual weaknesses, we can do something else: recognizing our weaknesses.
Actually recognizing our weaknesses and/or the several areas we may be weaker than other people can help us a lot.
Make a mental list of everything that could potentially be your weakness. When you’re in this step we’re ready for the glorious next step in overcoming this:
2. Second step: Get away of the situation or object of temptation
Run from the trigger of your sexual temptation.
It is absolutely AMAZING and really beautiful how much help there is in the Bible for every single topic a human could ever deal with.
When trying to find the trigger it’s obviously simple, we must ask ourselves the following question: What’s causing us to be tempted to sin sexually?
The reason we could be having a sexual temptation could be random, or it could be that the devil is directly using some person in our life to do it, or another specific situation to get us to sin.
This is the message given in the incredible story of Joseph in Genesis.
The Bible gave us an example of this when Joseph tried to escape from the trigger of his sexual temptation, when Pharaoh’s wife tried to get Joseph to have sexual relations with her.
Let’s immediately look at Genesis 39:6-10:
Genesis 39:6-10:“Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,
7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”
8 But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.
9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”
10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.
It’s simple! Run, my dear Christian, run!
Once you have made everything you can possibly do to get away from the situation of sexual temptation, it’s time for you to take the next, incredibly important steps.
3. Third step: think other thoughts
This next step is incredibly important: we’re encouraged in the Bible to instruct our mind to think of productive, pure, and good things in Philippians 4:8:
Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things”.
4. Fourth step: Deny it
When you start to get these desires inside yourself, and you’ve taken the 3 steps above, the next step is to just deny this desires that entice you to sin.
There are Scriptures that point us in the direction that we should treat these desires as any other type of bad desire such as the desire to steal, lie, etc:
Mark 9:43-44: “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— 44 where
‘Their worm does not die
And the fire is not quenched.’”
And Romans 13:13-14: as well:
Romans 13:13-14: “Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts”.
It is SO amazing how applicable to today and inspired is the holy Word of our God.
How amazing it is the Word instructs us to “make no provision for the flesh”, because it is by all means stating that we should deny every single thing our flesh requires to please itself.
So, we must treat it like any other sinful desire, why shouldn’t it be the same as the temptation to steal, or to lie to someone or any other unlawful desire?
5. Fifth and final step: Pray
Of course, these previous 4 steps would not be complete without prayer. Glory to the Lord.
Very calmly and in a quiet place kneel before God and pray while you fight the sexual temptation. Praise the Lord.
In conclusion, my dear Christian, God loves us and knows our weaknesses, and we may think sexual temptation is strong but we must never under any circumstance succumb to it.
The body of everyone who loves Jesus is the temple of the Holy Spirit and therefore it must be remain holy everyday not defiled by sexual sins.
We must be inspired to RUN and FLEE like the Biblical Joseph, to take all these 5 amazing steps to defeat all sexual temptation, because with our powerful God’s strength we can do it. God bless you!
