10 Bible Verses To Pray To Start Taming The Tongue

The practices of gossip, slander and lying provide evidence that the sins of the tongue can be numerous. It’s important we start to pray for taming the tongue, because what we verbally state can bless or hurt others and ourselves.

The issue with taming the tongue can be both hard and easy. According to the Bible, the tongue can be evil that is difficult to tame, but definitely not impossible with the “foolproof” method (described at the end) that our God has given for us to know.

Let’s discover a few conspicuous Bible verses to pray and start and taming the tongue:

We begin with Psalm 139:4!

taming the tongue

  1. Psalm 139:4:

4 “Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely”.

2. Ecclesiastes 5:2:

2 “Do not be quick with your mouth,
do not be hasty in your heart
    to utter anything before God.
God is in heaven
    and you are on earth,
so let your words be few”.

3. James 3:

Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

Then it continues on:

7 “All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison”.

And the Apostle James continues to severely emphasize:

9 “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?”

4. Psalm 34:12-13:

12 “Whoever of you loves life
and desires to see many good days,
13 keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from telling lies”.

5. Prov. 15:4:

4 “The soothing tongue is a tree of life,
but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit”.

6. James 1:26:

26 “Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless”.

7. Psalm 141:3-4:

3 “Set a guard over my mouth, Lord;
keep watch over the door of my lips.
Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil
so that I take part in wicked deeds
along with those who are evildoers;
do not let me eat their delicacies”.

Did you know that David’s Psalms are also prophecies that will last until the end of time? We can really gaze upon how the Word of God never contradicts itself in this amazing Bible verse where the king and prophet David prophesies that we must pray that the Lord guards our lips and then continues astonishingly like a perfect clockwork by adding what can influence your lips above all things: your heart. Just like the Lord Jesus stated in Matthew 15:8(which we’ll get into) the heart is the real deal.

8. Deut. 30:14:

14 “No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it”.

9. Prov. 14:7:

3 “A fool’s mouth lashes out with pride,
but the lips of the wise protect them”.

taming the tongue

10. Matthew 15:8:

10 “Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”

Then our Lord continued to say what is most important when praying for taming the tongue:

18 “But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

This is what is most important to pray for, for a pure heart, and clean one, that is not filled with anger, or hatred or unkindness or just simple sin, that can make us say things and use our tongue for things that do not glorify God.

If you have a clean heart, taming the tongue will be the easiest thing ever for you. This is what is most important. This is what will give you a tongue that glorifies God 100% OF THE TIME. I encourage you to pray for a clean heart from which will flow a pure manner of verbal communication.

  1. Thank you for this good reminder. A tongue is a great iniquity, and how men have been able to tame every animal on earth, and yet we cannot tame our tongue. We should always be quick to hear but slow to speak.
