Bible Verses About The Heart: 12 Important Scriptures

There are many Bible verses about the heart, as the heart has a great significance in the Bible as the epicenter for decisions, thoughts, intentions and your core identity. It is the most important part of ourselves in the eyes of God.

What occurs in the heart is the cause of the success or the downfall of a person either in Christian life, or outside of it. It is the place where either beautiful deeds for God or sins first originate.

The Bible has life-changing wisdom when it comes to the heart, and exhorts us to monitor the state of our heart like a delicate plant that requires punctilious daily care and watering, to ensure it is constantly healthy and ready to engage in endeavors that glorify God.

So, Here Are 12 Important Bible Verses About the Heart:

Bible verses about the heart

1. 1 Samuel 16:7:

7 “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

In this passage, David was about to be selected by God to become king of Israel, and it is beautiful that we learn what was the criterion that made him qualify to become a God-selected monarch: the quality of his heart.

Other similar Bible verses to this one reiterate the same truth: the first and foremost place to please God is the heart.

2. Proverbs 4:23:

23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

The previous Bible verse leads nicely into this one; begin with the heart, the essential starting place to please God and all the rest follows.

Exactly like our amazing Lord stated in the Gospels, like the fruit that grows from a tree, our heart is the breeding ground for all of our endeavors. If our heart is in a less than optimal condition, all of our endeavors are inevitably affected.

3. Ezekiel 18:31:

31 “Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel?”

In the time of the prophet Ezekiel, the Israelite heart was in such a decrepit state, it needed to be completely transformed by God.

As it was mentioned earlier, the heart is the epicenter of thoughts and decisions, and the nucleus of your identity. God will change our identity if this is what must be done.

4. Psalm 44:20-21:

20 “If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, 21 would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?”

God knows each and every one of our thoughts, which is why we should always keep our thoughts pure!

5. Luke 6:44-45:

Bible verses about the heart

44 “Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”

Similar to Proverbs 4:23, our heart is the breeding ground for all of our endeavors, and even our words. Attending to the wisdom that our amazing God is providing here, we must listen to when, how and what other people say when they speak and we will be able to gauge a big part of who they really are.

Are we speaking constantly about vain things that lead nowhere? To gossip, or other unedifying talk? Let us listen to the teaching of Christ and check if our heart is a quality heart which leads us to speak edifying words to other people.

6. Jeremiah 17:9-10:

9 “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 10 “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”

The Lord knows that the heart is where our true priorities and intentions lie.

7. Lamentations 2:19:

19″Arise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord.”

8. Proverbs 15:11:

11 “Death and Destruction lie open before the Lord— how much more do human hearts!”

9. Revelation 2:23:

23 “Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.”

I hold a special love for the first chapters of the book of Revelation, because in them the Lord addresses the early churches of the Greco-Roman world to help them with their particular struggles of their time.

In this Bible verse of chapter 2, God rebukes this church for its open tolerance of sinful practices, and as he says, he will search our hearts to see if we tolerate sin in our lives.

10. Psalm 51:10:

10 “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

Psalm 51 is the Psalm where David apologizes to God for his affair with Bathsheba. He knew his sin began with the initial lust he harbored in his heart, and therefore asked for a purer heart.

Like David, let us pray for having a pure heart.

11. Luke 2:19:

19 “But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.”

This Bible verse is salient in our compilation about Scriptures about the heart because it shows something all Christians should do, meditate in the word of God.

Mary gives us an illustrious example of what it means to have a Godly heart, which is a heart that ponders every single word of God. Besides fasting and praying, the way to clean one’s heart is to digest and meditate in His word and to subject every thought to his word, which according to Psalm 119:99, this will yield wisdom.

 12. Luke 10:27:

Bible verses about the heart

27 “He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”

It is beautiful to finish with this Scripture that contains the most important activity we must set our hearts to do: Love God above all things. Of all the things that our heart can do in life, whether that is loving your partner, spouse, your job or anything, the one that must stand at the top is loving God.

Indeed, these Bible verses about the heart teach us that the matters of the heart are not to be taken lightly. Like a delicate plant that requires daily watering and care, we should monitor and take care of our it regularly.

Let us pray for having a heart that improves in quality before God, that doesn’t fall into a decrepit state over time and for having one that is constantly producing the most fragrant and beautiful deeds for God.
